Top 5 tips to help you shine in the IELTS Speaking Test

Master 5 practical IELTS Speaking tips to answer strategically, speak with more confidence, avoid common mistakes, and perform better on test day.

1. Don't just say "Yes" or "No"

The Speaking test is your opportunity to demonstrate your language ability. If your answers are too brief, the examiner won't have enough data to award you a high score.

Tip: Always expand your answers, especially in Part 1. Instead of simply saying: "Yes, I like reading," say: "Yes, I absolutely love reading in my free time, particularly fantasy novels because they help me relax and forget about work." This immediately helps you use a wider variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

2. Utilise less common vocabulary

To move past band 6.5 and aim for band 7.0+, you need to demonstrate the ability to use flexible and varied vocabulary.

Tip: Instead of only using basic words, replace them with synonyms or less common vocabulary, particularly appropriate collocations (naturally occurring word pairings) and idioms. For example, instead of saying "very happy," use "over the moon" or "ecstatic." However, ensure you use them accurately and naturally to avoid losing marks.

3. Use Discourse Markers Professionally

In English, using words or phrases that help connect ideas and structure your speech is known as Discourse Markers. This is a critical factor for the examiner when assessing Fluency and Coherence.

Tip: These phrases help you connect your ideas and avoid long pauses while organizing your thoughts, making your speech more coherent. Using them accurately also earns high marks in the Fluency and Coherence criterion. 4. Master the Four Core Assessment Criteria

To conquer your desired band score, the most important thing is to understand exactly what the examiner is looking for. The IELTS Speaking test is scored based on 4 clear criteria.

Tip: During every practice session, focus on one of the four areas: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Understanding each criterion helps you know exactly where you need to improve to boost your band score. (Discover more at: Unlocking the 4 IELTS Speaking assessment criteria)

5. Don't forget intonation and stress

Pronunciation is not just about saying individual words correctly; it's also about using appropriate intonation and stress. This is the "music of the language," making your speech sound natural, easy to listen to, and expressive.

Tip: Focus on varying the pitch of your voice (raising and lowering it) to:

- Distinguish between questions and statements: raise the pitch slightly at the end of Yes/No questions.
- Emphasise key points: use sentence stress to highlight important keywords.
- Convey emotion: use intonation to show interest, surprise, or doubt. Correct intonation will help you achieve a high score in the Pronunciation criterion.

Aspirely hopes that applying these strategies consistently will help you not only speak more confidently but also demonstrate the linguistic complexity required to achieve your desired band score.
